III Sofia Baroque Arts Festival (7 November - 1 December 2009)
The 3rd edition of the Sofia Baroque Arts Festival will take place in Bulgaria Concert Hall between 7 November - 1 December 2009. Performers include the European Union Baroque Orchestra, directed by Petra Mullejans, Ensemble Cordevento & Erik Bosgraaf, fortepianists Vasily Ilisavsky and Galina Draganova, Concerto Antico and Tsvetana Ivanova.
First of its kind in Bulgaria, Sofia Baroque Arts Festival came in response to the public's desire for an event focused particulary on early music. Luxuria Europae, a foundation supporting young and talented musicians, interested in the music from the 16th, 17th and 18th century and the so-called historical practices, started the initiative and brought to the Bulgarian audience three evening concerts and a number of complementary events like educational concerts for children and students, exposition of string instruments. Works by more than 20 composers were performed, more than half of which had their premiere for Bulgaria.
The second edition of the festival will be held in November 2008, this time with concerts not only in Sofia but also in Varna and Pernik. Special guest will be the EUROPEAN UNION BAROQUE ORCHESTRA (EUBO) will present their concert programme titled 'Tour de France' under the direction of the former EUBO music director and world-wide known specialist in the field of Baroque music - ROY GOODMAN. The Minister of Culture of Bulgaria - Prof. Stefan Danailov, who is also patron ex-officio of the European Union Baroque Orchestra, will be the successor of Mrs. Zorka Parvanova as this year's patron of Sofia Baroque Arts Festival. The famous Dutch recorder virtuoso ERIK BOSGRAAF will present two programmes ('Concerti a flauto solo' & 'Een Spaense Voys') in Sofia with his ensemble CORDEVENTO and in a collaboration with Bulgarian musicians. Ensemble ARS BAROCCA, awarded 'Musician of the year 2007' in the chamber music category by the National Radio, will play on the opening concert of the festival. After several successful concerts in Spain and the Netherlands, the consort of early music CONCERTO ANTICO will perform their programme titled 'L'Apotheose'.
